  • Women in school management positions, particularly principals of schools have a number of challenges, for example, they are caught in between work responsibilities and the role of being a mother and wife. Gender stereotypes makes the society look at women managers as uncapable of managing schools. Hence they sometimes tend to lose their identity as women in a male orientated field of school management. Therefore, they sometimes tend to grow muscles in an attempt to prove themselves as capable managers. Despite all their challenges, they still believe in effectively managing their schools through involving all the stakeholders that have interest in education matters in the decision making process. This strategy seemed more appropriate in promoting democratic participation in schools as stipulated in South African education policies.

  • Information and communication technology has direct role to play in education and if used appropriately can bring many benefits to the classroom. ICT use in school management is important if its impact has to be felt in education. The perception and experience of teachers and school administrators play an important role in adoption of ICT schools. Computer use in Kenyan schools is still in its early phase despite the introduction of ICT the 70s. The potential of ICT as a tool to aid administration of schools has not been fully exploited.Despite the efforts by the stakeholders to integrate ICT in schools, the level of integration is low. Hence it is crucial to investigate the issues pertaining to the low level of adoption of ICT in schools. This study investigated the adoption and use of ICT enhancing efficiency in management of public secondary schools. The study findings are expected to be helpful to educational managers, policy makers and scholers interested in ICT use in schools and education sector in general.

  • A study was designed to evaluate the perceived impact of headteacher transfers on the management of Government Grant Aided Secondary Schools in Kampala district, Uganda, East Africa. Fifty percent of Headteachers, 90% of the deputies, 50% of Board of Governors, 23% of teachers participated in the study. The findings showed that not in all transfer cases are the Board of Governors consulted. Thus, they are forced either to accept or reject the new headteacher. It was also established that transfer of a headteacher has an effect on staff management because the new head may differs from the old, in terms of personality and interpersonal skills and attitudes, experience and the style of leadership. To a lesser extent, the Management of students'discipline was interfered with especially after the transfer of a disciplinarian headteacher. The Ministry of Education and Sports is advised to work hand in hand with all the stakeholders to be involved in the process of headteacher transfers. Further studies are needed to understand transfers of headteachers of other types of schools in the Education sector in Uganda and neighboring states of the East African region.

  • The cascading effects of globalization in the form of changing business environment, economic uncertainties and economic meltdown have brought about a plethora of unprecedented challenges for industry and organizations across the globe in recent years. Management education, which prepares human capital for industry, is expected to address these challenges along with others such as intensifying competition, advancing technology, increasing workforce diversity and accelerating complexity. Yet, current management education is largely based on traditional capitalism where the focus tends toward profits and competitiveness rather than toward a balance among profitability, responsibility, social accountability and sustainability. Consequently, management education in general, and MBA education in particular, need to adopt a paradigm shift in order to be more responsible and sustainable. The book contains contributions on the core management topics covered in general management, organizational behavior, ethics and social responsibility, with a focus on responsible management. Its chapters come from many authors in PRME schools from eight countries. Hence, it is expected to be useful to all the B-schools, across geographies that are interested in embedding responsibility in their management curriculum and teaching methodology.

  • From the mid-16th century to the beginning first quarter of the 21st century, economic thought can be split into five main historical schools: mercantilism; the economics of the French physiocrats; classical economics; Keynesianism; and monetarism. The schools do not necessarily encompass the views of all economists. The mercantilists, between the mid-16th and mid-18th centuries, argued that the wealth of nations depended on their balance of trade. Proponents of the theory were concerned to maximize the amount of precious metals in the country. Protectionism was encouraged. Economic forecasting and growth are variables, either macro-economic (for country/ies) or micro-economic (for product/market), which deals with the increase in the productive capacity of an economy.

  • Since its economic boom in the 1990s Ireland has been facing ever growing waste arisings. Strict European legislation forced the country to find alternative solutions to sole waste disposal on which the country had been relying on exclusively. The Irish Government has aimed to decouple waste production from economic growth. The author doubts that the planned introduction of thermal treatment facilities would be an appropriate way to achieve the country´s ambitious targets in terms of waste management. Alternatively the author introduces a zero waste approach as a solution to Ireland´s waste problems. If a zero waste approach was applied emphasis would have to be put on reduction, minimization and recycling. Accordingly, the country of Ireland would pay its contribution to world wide challenging environmental protection and sustainable resource management.

  • This is a first of its kind empirical study addressing the unmarked topic of risk management practices (RMPs) of IFIs and CFIs in Pakistan. The study aimed at expanding the existing literature by providing novel empirical evidence. Literature review classified risks faced by both IFIs and CFIs under six categories. The research concludes that credit risk, equity investment risk, market risk, liquidity risk, rate of return risk and operational risk management practices in IFIs are not different from the practices in CFIs and the overall risk management practices of IFIs and CFIs are alike in Pakistan. The study also concludes that a research based in one country cannot be generalized to another country therefore every country must conduct research in its own context. This opens our eyes to the fact that much is unknown about the risk management practices in Pakistani financial system, creating a need for empirical studies for further discoveries to formulate better frameworks and to prevent an impending financial crisis that might be unraveling as you read this book. • Current research illustrates that some schools, often referred to as high-performing, high-poverty schools, have led their low-income populations to high levels of achievement (Ambrose, 2008). Hypothesizing that some schools were doing quite well with students from low-income families, the director for the Center for Urban Studies at Harvard University, Ronald Edmonds and other researchers looked at achievement data from schools in major cities around the country where student populations were from high-poverty areas. During the 1980s a list was developed that identified common characteristics that were present in effective schools. These traits became known as the Correlates of Effective Schools. These correlates appeared repeatedly in high-performing schools, despite the schools' socioeconomic levels (Lezotte, 1991). Research regarding high-poverty, high-performing elementary schools specifically located in South Carolina is limited. The purpose of this research was to learn how principals of high-poverty, high-performing elementary schools in South Carolina promote high levels of student achievement.

  • Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: Sehr gut, The University of Surrey (School of Management), course: Business Administration, language: English, abstract: Today, the service sector contributes to a major part of the GDP of the most developed countries, while the share of services of the total export of these countries is comparable low. This constitutes certain challenges for the internationalisation of services. With regard to the use of "country-of-origin effects" (COO), the special service characteristics create challenges for service companies, e.g. by the inseparability of service provision and consumption. When decisions on the market entry options are made and local staff is favoured to expatriate staff, incongruence in the COO facets occurs which is difficult to hide. Based on the research on products, this might reduce COO's positive effects on service consumers' quality expectations (ESQ). In this context, the question arises whether information on training in the company's home country (CTI) can reduce the aforementioned negative effect. In order to examine the existence of these relationships, an online provided self-administered experiment was created. Using a non-probability sample of 100 Germans, respondents were asked to rate two different service examples with regard to the ESQ. In each example, the country of the person providing the service (CPI) wa...
